what makes them better than a normal mage?

They aren't better. Get more spell-slots per level, but can't cast magic of opposite school. I like sorcerers more!!!

I personally like the Conjurer or the Necromancer when playing a specialist mage. Basicaly you have to choose which schools you want to do without, because of the unfortunate drawback of opposition schools.
