I genuinely hope it doesn't happen again. :(

.
(CNN) -- U.S. officials were urging residents to evacuate coastal regions in the Indian Ocean after a earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 struck off the coast of Indonesia Monday.
.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration urged residents within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter to evacuate coastal regions.
.
The quake was centered on the same fault line where a December 26 earthquake launched a tsunami that killed at least 175,000 people.
.
The director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said scientists there feared another tsunami might hit the area.
.
Charles McCreary said he could not be certain that the quake, which was 203 kilometers (126 miles) from Sibolga on Sumatra Island, would cause a tsunami.
.
Experts agreed the quake was massive.
.
"This earthquake has the potential to generate a widely destructive tsunami in the ocean or seas near the earthquake," NOAA said in a statement on its Web site. "Authorities in those regions should be aware of this possibility and take immediate action."
.
Asked whether evacuations are taking place, USGS spokesman Don Blakeman said, "I certainly hope so."

I heard this earlier on the news. I hope there are no tsunamis resulting in that earthquake. If there is, I hope the warning is enough to get everyone away from the sea!

There's a thread in current events about it too.

I'd be heading inland at this point... me and 500,000 of my closest friends ;) I imagine the traffic is very backed up at this point (wherever there is traffic).

But I do hope that it goes quietly, for the sake of those who have already suffered once.

Unfortunately, I'd be amazed if even 10% of the 'at risk' population knew about this.

You'd think after last time, there would be a system in place. i.e. immediate TV and radio broadcasts urging relocation.

Just goes to show, the old adage 'lightning never strikes twice in the same place'...

shamrock_uk 03-28-2005 05:21 PM

I'm sure there is. The problem is that these rural fishing communities don't have radio/tv/good road links. Technology just can't help here.

Just an update: hundreds are killed by the earthquake but tsunami warnings are scaled down. link

One of the sensors picked up a 25CM wave out in deep water, which is pretty big for deep water but not tsunami size.

im glad its not that bad compared to before. still, human lives lost is sad.
