Having sex results in babies?

AFP
Manila, March 1, 2005

As many as 30 per cent of couples in the Philippines are unaware that having sex can result in babies, Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit said on Tuesday.

"They do not know how pregnancy happens," even though some of them have had numerous children already, Dayrit remarked.

The discovery was the result of field studies by health workers who went door-to-door to determine population control program awareness, Dayrit said in remarks released in Manila.

He did not say how many couples in the mainly Roman Catholic nation were surveyed.

The field workers found that in many of these cases, the couples believed the children were simply gifts from God.

"Often times people do things even if they don't understand why they do it," Dayrit said, attributing the ignorance over sex to the conservatism of Philippine society.

"A lot of it is cultural because people don't talk about sex," he said, remarking that "knowledge is often tempered by values. And if the values are such that they will reject knowledge there's nothing you can do," he added.

The government is promoting a door-to-door campaign for population control in this country of 84 million people but the Catholic church, which counts about 80 percent of the population as followers, has been actively opposing the campaign.

Just a quick note- keep the discussion off religion, which is still on moratorium, I'm afraid. I think this is going to be hard, considering the topic.

I hope this thread doesn't go down a dark spiral. I posted it because I thought it was funny, is all.

I figured as much, but you know how things go sometimes! I did have to chuckle when I read it....although it is a bit scary in some ways! Kids don't just magically come down the chimney!

i come from the philippines. alot of the people there are really ignorant sadly. plus one of the thing that pi$$es me off is the catholic church trying to stop practical thinking such as condoms and sex awareness. thats the reason of the population is so out of control. of course i have alot of disagreements with the catholic church as well but it will go towards religous portion which i know its banned.

thats conservatism society and filipino mentality for you.

which would you prefer..

catholic church talks about family planning
government talks about sex education & awareness and the use of condoms

which would be more effective for the ignorant and with a population of 80+ million and growing and too few of the catholic church to try and spread thier ideas towards family planning??

sometimes i say praticality and knowledge is more important than blind faith in some issues. my 10cents

<span style="color: lightblue">You're confusing the issue - not a stork, but the Stork. The Stork brings can also bring babies to a stork.
And to answer your next question, The Stork doesn't have babies.

i think ignorance is horrible, and i think any institution encouraging ignorance is down right wrong.

NFP (natural family planning, which is different than the never works "rythm method") is something that needs education. one can not practice NFP without proper education. i should know. we tried and are going to have another child in about 10 weeks.

so to me the catholic church is contradicting itself, saying "don't educate! but please learn this method to plan your family." as a used-to-be catholic myself it doesn't surprise me.

please note my veiws are mine and mine alone, and i do not have anything against catholics, i just feel the catholic church has made some bad decisions.
