Good evening, all. Wish me luck, I'm going Christmas shopping. On the plus side, we will be looking for a new scanner. I have many drawings and paintings that I want to post on the internet, so I would appreciate some words of wisdom (i.e., recommendations from the good folks here at Ironworks.

buying a scanner, well if you want somthing good for a cheap price i'd go with hp scanjet
that's pretty good, if not look around kodak, they have very niceones
but if it's your first scanner, don't bother buying an expensive one, it won't last XD well that's about it..i still need to get a scanner for myself
this is all what my teacher told me ^_^
anyways the brand names i put XD

well..looking forward to seeing your art ^_^

Attalus, there are some very fine scanners available with a good combination of flexibility and resolution for a relatively low price.

A few features to look for:
1. Color Depth - Nothing less than 32 bit, but 48 bit color is now standard on most new scanners
2. Connection - USB 2 and/or firewire - for large scans having a fast connection can make a big difference.
3. Potentially useful accessories such as adaptors for scanning negatives and slides. Again, this is tending to become fairly standard with newer models.
4. Software bundle - does the scanner come with the software that is adequate for what you plan to do with your images? A bundle that includes Photoshop Elements, for example, is a nice plus.

A couple models you might want to consider looking at are the Epson Perfection 2480 which has gotten some very fine reviews, is available for under $100 and should be plenty powerful for a starter scanner. I'm presently using an Epson 3170 Photo and have been very pleased with its versatilty and the quality of the scans.

Canon has a nice led scanner which is light enough to carry. It is a lide 80 2400x 4800. I got it at newegg.com Give it a look see.

I just bought an all-in-one 3 weeks ago. It's an HP 6110. Depending on what your going to spend, that's the way to go. It's just so much more versitile. The other thing to consider is "transparent materials adaptor"! If you have a lot of negatives that you want to scan and organize, this is a great thing. They come on most HP models and I'm sure others as well.

we have a printer/scanner/copier from hp (2175) i love it, but gee, i wish i could get a larger scanning bed, but even nathan's work doesn't have the size i need for some of my canvases. good luck! and if you ever have to scan something in halves and need help hiding the seam i'd be happy to help. i just took down my sig that i had to do that on, but i used to have an example up

Yeah, this is my first one. Thanks to one and all who answered.

Attalus personally I'd avoid HP... they have a "software suite" that craps TSR's all over your system... I've never seen a less important periperal that adds so much useless crap to your desktop.

As far as mechanicals... I've got an HP that has been reliable, but I personally recommend the Epson Perfection series... I've bought 4 of them in the last year. My New Epson Perfection 4870 Photo is a solid machine at a respectable price (for what your getting), under 500 bucks and with enough resolution to scan slides with respectable performance.

Thanks, Thoran, I shall certainly look into the Epson series, though I can't spend $500.

Don't know if it's too late, but you could try the 'Epson Perfect 1670 Photo' for a cheaper choice, or the 'Epson 3170 Photo' for a more expensive choice.
