Lesser cousins of the rare and expensive Red is being sold in its place. It is not mentioned on whether the findings could prove this was being done on purpose. DNA samples prove that the majority of the samples taken were not what they were being sold as. The Red Snapper has a high price, due to it's rarity and popularity in some dishes.</font>

Heard about this on the news. The problem is that it is often difficult to tell just what kind of fish is in the counter. Oh there are some one can tell right away. But most white fish even labs have problems. On the west coast they sell something call "Pacific Red Snapper". There ain't no such thing.

Actually, there is species of snapper known as Pacific Red Snapper, called "Bocaccio" by biologists, it's found from north central California to northern Mexico. It used to be a that large percentage of the rockfish caught in that area were bocaccio, but they've been severely overfished and are in danger of extinction.
