I can't believe this happened!

I gave Minsc the Sword of Berserking, because I thought that maybe he could handle it.

Boy, was I in for a shock.

Not only did he say he must protect his witch, Aerie, but the Sword caused him to attack her! I had to reload the game!

She exploded...got me very mad.

Just a glaring reminder that I should have her stay in the back from now on.

Well...um, the sword is cursed. So he can't control when he goes berserk or not, unlike using his normal ability.

I've found that when Minsc goes berserk even using his normal abilities, he sometimes goes haywire and attacks the party when there are no more monsters to fight and the berserk state hasn't ended. I don't know if this is a factor of his wisdom (which is low) or not, but I'm always careful to make sure he's in the thick of battle and away from the others when I have him go ape sh**. ;)

Cheers,

When Minsc goes berserk, he'll randomly attack enemies. When none are left, he may take a few swings at party members, but then he'll calm down. If the duration hasn't expired he'll go berserk again if he sees another enemy, and when they die he'll take a few more swings at party members, then calm down again. The cursed sword has this same effect, and I'm inclined to believe a berserk fighter's rage (like Korgan or perhaps a barbarian rage) works the same way.

i think its just cuz minsc is thick, korgan never attacks my party and minsc does, then he got moaned at by keldorn about the enemies are all dead,so i think its just summit to do with him being dropped on his head a few to many times.

same thing happened to me, and I never used it again. At that part of the game
sunray and lilacor are much better swords

Same thing happened to my sister in BG1, she had Minsc go berserk, and he accidentally killed Dynaheir. The difference is my sister went against re-loading her game because she had gotten so far, so Dynaheir stayed dead :C(

My berserk fighter/thief never lost control. However, I've noticed that the special ability for berserkers is called "Enrage" while it's called "Berserk" for barbarians (and Minsc). Maybe there's a difference between the two.

Minsc's berserk ability is unique, I believe.. His little icon is Boo! He's a special case, since he's had it since BG1 and he's a ranger, not a berserker or barbarian.. they added those later, but with a slightly different set of rules.

I think that's because he's a member of the Wolf lodge of Rasheman or something like that...whatever it was that sent him out on his Dajemma to "prove" himself. The Berserk ability was gained when he was initiated into the Lodge, so you're right; that's not a normal Ranger ability. By rights, Minsc should have been a Barbarian, but since that kit wasn't available in BG1, they had to come up with the nearest thing, which would be a ranger (close to the wilderness).

That's funny because I played all the way through SOA and TOB with Minsc in my party and never once did I even consider using his berserk ability. I'm kinda glad I didn't now. There's nothing worse than having a 30th level Ranger with Gram the Sword of Grief coming after your little mages like Imoen.
