what are you going to do with those NPC's anyway? collect them like bottle caps? try to play the game in solo, youll love it.

These two are simply non-party NPCs being made into Party NPCs:
Solaufein
Valen

Also, some people here are working on creating others... I think a Thief who`s tied in with twisted rune somehow, a Yoshimo sendup, and a couple of others are in progress.

People sometimes LIKE to play with different NPCs. To see what they have to offer; to see their personalities, to romance them, to do their quests.
And possibly he already HAS solod, several times; and wants to try something new, that he hasn`t done before. Hence, mods came to be. For those people who just want something different. Be they extra quests, new NPC/s, or new classes to play; someone may just want something different.

I think you'd better finish the game first before downloading mods.
They're are (mostly) there for people who have played the game a couple of times with most NPCs and who find it becomes boring.
Aye, I agree with philip. First finish the game, and see how it is without MODs, and then try perhaps some minor MODs, like Solaufein or Kelsey for your second game, and then try the big MODs, like TDD, Ascension (only if you have ToB, though), etc. ;)

There's also Kelsey and Tashiya, two custom-made NPCs.
I see no reason why someone playing BG2 for the first time wouldn't want to do so with Kelsey, Tashia, Solaufein, and/or Valen. Now that Weimer has added interjections to Solaufein and Valen, they're largely indistinguishable from the "real things", and I would say that each has components that make them "better."

Actually, I might recommend that a first-timer not take Valen simply because her unusual and powerful nature is a big departure from playing most other NPCs. But Kelsey, Tashia, Solaufein... why not?
