- i killed the demonknight in durlags tower (pretty easy)
then when i returned to ulgoths beard i go attacked by the
cult members and i lost the dagger no matter what. i went to the
big building and went into the cellar but no one was down there and
there was no one in the upstairs part either. what happend
is there anything i can do or do i have to start over.

Everything is fine, from what you have told us.
Go to the dwarf that gave you the quest to find the dagger, and he will tellya some crap, then go and investigate the Cult place again.

everytime i talk to the dwarf he says "go and retrieve me grandpas dagger"
to go to durlags tower was i supposed to take that guys tour.

Hmmm im not sure about it but that might be the reason why you are stuck... ive always took the tour anyway... LITTLE SPOILER:

i dont think i had his wardstone. the only wardstone that i had
was the two that you get from that guy with the wierd name. after the
tower i talked to some guy and he gave me a wardstone if i paid his tab
is that the one you are talkin about.

you dont need those wardstones, only the ones you get in durlags tower are needed...About the cult, when you reenter Ulgoths beard youll be attacked by a cult, theyll take the dagger no matter what. you then proceed to the cult building, kill the guards and enter. Youu kill guards and stuff in thier too. You then procceed into the basement where there will be cult priests and a big demon, AecLetec. Have fun, Its not very easy.

that is the problem assasin there are no cult guards or anyone in
the building for that matter.

then try loading from an earlier save or something
