I have a virus at work (again!), is win32bugbear, a lovely thing Norton found it during a scan, but could not repair it, only quarantine it (which I have no idea what quarantining does). Anyways, I have these complicated instructions from Symantic how to remove it, but one part in the instructions I couldn't figure out before I left work for the day. It says that most likely you have to be in Safe Mode to use the Removal Tool. I tried to reboot and kept hitting F8 over and over again, but it didn't seem to work. The instructions say you can also use "System Configuration Utility" to do it, but where the heck can I find that?
Any help would be appreciated. Apparently this virus also has been stopping me from updating Norton Antivirus. It seems to update, but apparently it hasn't been. So I really need to get this stupid bugbear crap off! |
The only way that I know how to do it is by hitting F8. Odd that it's not working... Good luck with this, ladyzekke.

Typing msconfig into the run prompt opens System Configuration Utility.
On the general tab, it says normal start up, diagnostic setup, and selective startup. You want the diagnostic one, I suppose. [ 01-08-2004, 06:01 PM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ] |
Hm...I have to press F11 I think for mine...you could try that, I guess.
EDIT: Sorry, I mean I press F11 at startup to get into the boot menu where I can choose to start Windows in Safe mode. Worth a try. [ 01-08-2004, 06:24 PM: Message edited by: slicer15 ] |
Thanks Larry, I'll give it a shot when I get into work tommorrow
Slicer - you mean I could try rebooting the machine, and while it is in the middle of rebooting try hitting F11 to get to a boot menu? |
Quarantine means that the virus had been detected and locked away so it cannot infect your computer. To remove it from quarantine go to:
START > Programs > Norton Antivirus > Quarantine. Then delete the item from quarantine. Or you can just ignore it. If the virus is in quarantine it can not harm your computer. To be on the safe side though run your LiveUpdate (START>Programs>Norton Antivirus> Liveupdate) and also run a Windows update for all Critical Updates and patches ( go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com ) EDIT: To get into Safe Mode on Win XP restart the PC and hit F8 until you get a Text Menu. Select Safe Mode on this Menu Cheers, [ 01-08-2004, 10:05 PM: Message edited by: T-D-C ] |
