I was looking through a bunch of websites owned by Conspiracy Theorists and I come across an article saying that America is heading toward something called a "Police State." What the hell is that?

As you can see, a Police State is basically a state in society where the goverment and law enforcement can do whatever they want without any regard for common legal practices, often overriding them.

If you read the novel '1984' (George Orwell) than you know what a police state is. ;)

Also in the Matrix movies. When govts are in fear and distrust of its citizens, then they may revert to a police state. Though it would might also be called certain types of -isms.
