I'm currently staring at the huge list of DirectX 9.0 downloads at the Microsoft Website. The only reason I need the program, is because Microsoft applications (Games ;) ) won't install otherwise.

You;re not planning on doing any directx programming are you? In that case I'm pretty sure you just need 1. DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime
since you are an end-user and just want to run directx programs not develop any.
