LONDON (Reuters) -- The universe may be finite, spherical and patched together like a soccer ball, according to U.S. and French researchers.

Jeffrey Weeks, a MacArthur Fellow based in Canton, New York, and researchers from the University of Paris and Observatory of Paris studied astronomical data which suggests the universe is finite and made of curved pentagons joined together into a sphere.

And they actually get a salary for researching stuff like this ?

All of the beer-drinking jobs were taken...

... but there are still some American-bashing soccer-vs-football jobs available

*note to the humor-impaired: the above is sarcasm, and is not intended to provoke a drawn-out debate over soccer, football, and their variations. For those interested in such discussion, go to the GD search function and you will find it... :D

*mutter* #%$^@#$%^ sarcasm smiley... *mutter*

Willow, did you hide the sarcasm smiley again? Bring it back... please?

Shouldn't astronomers be looking for life on other planets and things just slightly more important than the shape of the freakin universe.

If they found out that the universe looks like a soccer ball maybe in the future they will find the players ?

Well the shape of the universe has been one of the fundamental questions in cosmology. If this finding stands up then it could be pretty major. Since it shows the Universe is finite, not infinite.
