I have just entered the underdark area (for the second time) and would like some help on an area that I had trouble with last time.

There are three elemental portals in this area. I have done battle with them and everytime I kill an elemental, another one appears. In front of the portal is a triangle-shape with a design inside which I thought was the clue to blocking the portal. However, I never found anything to stop more elementals coming through the portal once I killed one.

Am I missing something, or are these three area just to be avoided?

Are they air elementals? If so, just keep fighting; it will spawn 10 I think and then it will be over.

Best thing to do is to not get it in your LoS so it doesn't start spawning to begin with. Lots of great XP, though!

go to the bottom of the portals and talk to some dwares, they will tell you about an imprisoned mage, but a fredom scroll from them. Then go to the portals cast it and the mage will come out. Do what he says and you'll get some magical items, but at the end if you ask for more stuff he'll try to kill you (which is worth it because he has a nice helmet and scrolls)

::self-righteous voice:: You most certainly do not need to ask for more stuff. ::evil grin:: All you need to do is have good 'ol Immy follow him verrrry closely when he's walking to the other portals.. "Oops, excuse me, sir. Oh, sorry again. It's just so hard to see in this dark!" Pickpocket him blind, easy as pie, and you don't need to fight him. Fighting is evil... Though I guess stealing is... um.. neutral.

The elementals are not infinite. They will spawn between 12-20 times before they stop spawning. When you do the Imprisoned Mage quest, you will always get to battle one more elemental. This is a very good way to gain Xp, as the elementals are easy to defeat. You can even summon some helpers to do the dirty work for you.

Killing the evil Mage will give you more Xp. ;)

IIRC, there are 11 elementals at each portal. Good source of XP :D The elementals appear only if you come to the portal without the quest and without the mage. Therefore, always investigate the portals first and then go for the scroll :D
