Below is an extract from the 2004 Malaysian Budget Speech by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Bin Mohamad (phrases bolded for emphasis):

MArriage is a noble event involving all family members, especially parents of the bride and groom, kadi and witnesses as well as close friends. Although Islam allows husbands to divorce their wives by mere utterance of the words, divorce should not be taken lightly. It should be carefully thought through as children often become victims. Using SMS does not reflect respect for the sanctity of marriage and family institutions, including children. In addition, SMS is not secure as anybody can use it to send divorce messages without the knowledge of the husband. Yep, I think it shows a lack of guts and common courtesy to do that (divorcing through SMS).

Yes, Simple Messaging Service. It is the protocol for sending text over wireless networks to pagers and cell phones ...

There was an issue here over sacking people through SMS...that also sucks...man, have the respect to tell people things to their face...

Dumping your girlfriend by SMS, well sure but not divorce. That would cost way too much in airtime charges. :D

If you're not willing to say it to their face, then keep it to yourself, and get over it.
