Does anyone know of a way to password protect individual web sites? My friends and I have made a website and don't want just anyone to be able to walk into it. Is it possible to code it so that the password doesn't simply show up in the source code?

Thanks very much if you can help.

Simplest way to make sure it dosent have an abvious URL, make sure no links to it are posted anywhere, make sure nobody submits it to any search engines, and put a no-robot meta tag in it so if any robots do stumble on it they wont index it.

Or, you could use PHP to take a password and check it against a database stored on the server, but for things like that you need to have the software running on the server and many free hosts dont provide it. Also, some free hosts dont let you build private websites, you'd have to check the terms of service.

Thanks andrewas! We followed your first set of advice, so I think we're pretty safe.
