After reading a Rambo quote in the
<a href=http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=016264>Patriot ism thread</a>
I thought of me ranting about the Rambo sequels and some others and immediately wanted to share that.

IMHO that there are three types of sequels.

1.
Sequels that make sense because the first film features strong main characters who are the focus of the film and a story that mostly relys on them. This can be because the plot is taken from a series of books or just because the main characters are charismatic enough to give him another movie.
Good (and commonly known) examples are The Bond series, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Die Hard, American Pie, ...
NB: The 2nd movie doesn't need to be better or equally good but just a "good flick"

2.
Sequels that make no sense because the first movie mostly relied on an original idea that is nothing new in the sequel. Therefore the sequel is boring like "Oh, Babe the pig can still speak" or "Wow, this time it's a boat that needs to be kept on Speed"

3.
The first movie was great for one reason but the sequel(s) rely on a different one. Rambo and Rocky are good examples of that.
The first movies were great because they told an interesting story. A war hero doesn't get appreciated because the war was lost. He did everything for his country but it was decided that the cause he fought for was wrong. A boxer can't cope with his success, he's not smart enough to live nicely on his success. He's a good guy who is only great at one thing: boxing, but that isn't enough so he gets thrown around.
The sequels were sort of like "Hey Rambo/Rocky showed 'em. He's tough! Let's make another film where Rambo/Rocky shows 'em!"
All the essence of the story was lost, now there was only Sly Stallone and a lot of explosions.
Other (commonly known) examples here are: "Matrix (well there's a whole different story of exaggerating everything here and maybe it fits better under 2.), Scream, ...

I personally dislike the third type the most. These films should have been let alone to stand out as masterpieces (exaggerating a little bit) of their kind and not continued to be the start of a mindless series.

I'd say Friday the 13th was pretty bad. I liked the first one, maybe even the second, but how many sequels can you make ? It can't go on forever. I mean, how many times did that Jason character die in all the sequels ?

There is always the anime (ok hentai ...) Legend of the Overfiend and the first sequel Legend of the Demon Womb which makes very little sense next to each other. And by very little I mean less. They all know stuff that they shouldn't and the way it goes. Garrrrg!

MY pick for most screwed up sequels is the Evil Dead Sequel. With each new movie they basically say forget what we just told you this is what really happened, especially the 2nd one since it's basically a remake of the first.

I do, however, enjoy Evil Dead 3 aka The Army of Darkness, it's a gooder

The reason for the 2nd being like it is is becuase the first movie was supposed to be a serious horror movie, but after it came out, they realized how silly it was that they made the second with a more comic air to it (not saying it's a comedy, just that there's more "spoofy" things in it).

I think the worst sequels are the ones where they can't get the original star back for the movie, so they just plug another actor in. My favorite recast is in the Batman movies. Somehow when Harvey Dent became Two Face, he also changed races. Never mind that if you follow those movies, every woman under the sun seems to know Bruce's "secret" identity.

Hentai features things youll never see irl
for example, strange really long tenticles...

as for movies...well, gota give hollywood some slack; theres only so many original ideas out there and most have been used up. Heck youll notice this in most fantasy or sci fi novels, its all just a rehash of the same types of things happening just to different people.

Speed 2 is offically the worst sequel ever! Okay the first one wasn't two bright but it was still an engrossing action flick the second was well... crap.
