There is this:
Petition Urges Returning Statue Of Liberty To France

PITTSBURGH, 6:20 p.m. EST March 17, 2003 - The French position on the Iraqi situation has prompted protests throughout the United States.

Protesting french fries is easy. Just change the name to something like USA Fries or Freedom Fries.

Protesting French wine is easy too. Just pour it out.

"Nobody takes it seriously, and especially not France," said Josh Wander, of White Oak. "It doesn't make a difference to them if fries are called Freedom Fries."

Wander told WTAE-TV's Whitney Drolen that the answer is easy: Just send back France's best-known gift.

"A strong response like sending the Statue of Liberty back would be appropriate at this point," he said.

Wander has posted a petition on the Web site www.GiveItBack.net.

"Most people think it's a crazy idea and it is, I admit. But this crazy idea is necessary at this point in order to give such a strong response to France," he said.

The site has recieved thousands of hits and many have signed their name in support of ditching Lady Liberty.

When asked about the proposal to send the statue back, U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter said he has mixed emotions about the French.

"With respect to the Statue of Liberty, that is a great American symbol," he said. "We can bypass the source that it came from France."

This is the kind of idiot who doesn't represent the American view but gets tons of publicity because of his outlandish position and leaves the world thinking we're all this way. :(

Give it back, give it back, it will look wonderful facing the Tour Eiffel. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...ons/icon16.gif

It is the Freedom Statue, after all ... ;)

I dont know who Wander is (if he's famous or not) but a senator saying that really hurts: he's a politician, he should represent people and be moderate in what he says (here i have a problem with the language so it is not exactly what i want to say but i guess you can understand).

Not that i think it will be made or it is realistic or it is the majority opinion but though.

Donner, c'est donner. Reprendre, c'est voler. Mais rendre, c'est quoi? (i feel i couln't translate it so i leave it to the other french speakers).

It is the freedom statue after all, indeed that is why it's home is here

I question any American who could even think about that. Pure ignorance.

Yup, and makes us look like we have a collective IQ of 12. Best comment I read on this was on a web satire site where the person wrote: "Those of you who mockingly suggested this over the past few days may now understand the difficulties facing a satirist in times when reality so often surpasses satire."

That statue's like... darn expensive and stuff. Can't see how giving it to France is gonna "show'em" :/

Someone has a link about the ongoing petition to rename New-Orleans French Quarter ?
I'd like to know more about this as well.

And please keep telling me you're not all like that...it makes me feel better, really :(

What?!? How can he give that back? It was a gift to America from France! A sign of peace and friendship! And now, just because the French aren't going George Bush's way (didn't want to say American, as that could cause offence) some balmy senator has to come up with something like this! It makes me sick! That would be rejecting a present and would probably create unnecesary tension between the countries! Jeez, not everyone has to agree with George Bush, you know!

PS: I did not want to offend anyone here, the above is only my opinion

I guess this moron would also like all americans to stop using any and all of the following inventions, all created by the French.

No more diesel engines, folks! No more pencils. Oh, and all those blind people - they're gonna have to find some other way to read.

Don't worry guys - we know that this idiot doesn't represent the American people s a whole. We'll laugh at him without laughing at you
