Under Windows 98SE, when I shared a folder I was asked to input a password for the folder, but under XP Home, the only option I see is to share the file. I want to share it, but I want to password protect that folder, so how do I do it, or is it possible with XP?

I must be doing something wrong or completely missing something obvious because XP is suppose to be all about security, and I can't believe it only offers an unconditional sharing of the folder.

Help please!

XP IS more secure. That's why if you right click on the folder and select properties then go into security, you can set who has what access to it. You can password protect it by allowing only certain users read access to it - thereby they use their own password to access it. In the everyone group, unselect all the access privelages then manually add the users you want to have access.

On the folder property tabs, I only show General, Sharing, and Customize.

On the Sharing Tab there are two different areas. The first section is Local Sharing and Security. There is a box to check to make the folder private. This means that only I have access to the file.

In the second section of the Sharing Tab, Network Sharing and Security, there are two boxes to choose from. The first box is to share the folder, and when it's checked it allows me to make a share name. Checking the second box allows network users to change the files in this folder.

But even with everything checked I don't get the option to make a password. What am I doing wrong?

You know, one of these days M$ is going to make something so user friendly, it will actualy be dangerous, rather than just bloody stupid.

Control panel. Folder Options. View tab. Forth from the bottom, "Use simple file sharing (recommended)". The default setting dosent let you set a password. Thats right, the *default* setting cripples security in XP.

Andrewas, I tried the folder options approach, but it's not there. Fourth from the bottom on mine is "restore reprevious folder windows at logon".

I promise, I've been over the list a dozen times, and it's just not there. Any other ideas?

Upgrade to XP Pro. It seems that Xp Home is not only deficient in advanced networking like NT domains, but dangerously lacking in the basics like shared folder passwords.

And those are both things that windows 98 had. So XP home is a *backwards* step in some regards.

M$ are really getting to be annoying.

This is just crazy. I can't believe XP Home does not offer this feature!
