When I first got my computer(and with ever other computer I've ever had), if I inserted a disc that had an autorun file, it would automatically run.

If I put in a music CD or DVD, it would pop-up a list of possible programs that could run it and allowed me to choose one. It would also allow me to set that program as default for that type CD or leave it with the entire list to choose from again the next time.

Unfortunately, now when I put a CD in either drive, NOTHING happens! I have to go through "My Computer", double-click the drive to open it to a file list, and then manually choose autorun or setup or whatever.

I've been to the drives under "My Computer" and viewed their properties. There I can choose the Autoplay tab to set them up. I can choose specific programs for music, video, mixed content or whatever. I've reset it to default, which should just pop-up the original menu allowing me to choose which program to use, but it doesn't work. I still get nothing after inserting a disc. :(

Also, there doesn't seem to be an option to "autoplay" game discs under the drive properties tab. The list of disc types doesn't include a "software" option.

Help Please! My autorun's fallen, and it can't pop-up
!!!!!!!!!! :D

Okay, try this... (Win95/98)

-->My Computer-->Control Panel-->System-->Device Manager (tab)--> (continue next line)

-->CD-ROM-->(click on the + button to expand the tree for CD-ROM)

--> double click on your CD-ROM drive--> Settings (tab)--> Auto insertion notification. Check it and click ok. When asked to restart windows, click OK. Restart your Windows and give it a try.

I should have mentioned I'm running XP Home. I couldn't find anthing similar once I got to the device.

Any other ideas?

OK Ronn. Download Tweak UI here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp . Somewhere in there, there´s a setting for autoplaying CDs. I´m not sure what the tab is called, something like addict...

Edit: Installed it on my computer (win 2000, it´s the same program though). The tab is called 'paranoia'. Check the two boxes.

Ronn, I may have a solution using normal settings. I'll edit in couple of minutes

Edit:

Double Click My Computer

Click once (to highlight) on your CD/DVD drive

Click - File - Properties

You should get a box with an Auto Play tab included.
You can then select a different action for the different file types associated with the Drive. EG: Music files - Play using ****** Player (whichever player you have/want to use) or Blank CD - open with CD writer, or take no action etc...

NB this is WinXP Pro, but I think it's the same for Home.

Hope this helps - no need for downloads if you don't want. (Not that WillowIX's suggestion was a bad one )

Thanks Leo, but unfortunately that doesn't work. Whether I choose specific settings based on types of disc or return everything to default it still won't autoplay. Darn stubborn computer! ;)

Willow, I'll try "tweaking" tonight. :D
