I'm at a crossroads in my life...

I'm 16, currently studying for an HNC in Computing. However, I havn't been attending for a while, due to one thing or another.

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to join the Royal Air Force, and I've found out that I can do it now. Do you think I should? What are all your opinions?

I think being a pilot is as close you can get to heaven. :D

Ok, I came to exact same crossroads. I'm now 18, and still considering it.

You need A-levels at A/B grade to be a pilot. I know, I had the interviews. Lol. Thats to go in as an Officer also.

It's a good career, you get trained as whatever you go in as, earn money, and dnt spend much.

Study hard - you'll need the grades. You'll also need perfect eyesight and good health. (No congenital health defects or conditions like arythmia or high bp)

If you can get in, I definitely recommend it. The pilot's life in peacetime is like living at a country club. They also give you all kinds of educational options that could be a lot of use in the aerospace industry later on in life.

Western forces right now expect their pilots to be well versed in technology, and even encourage them to be lettered engineers.

I think you misunderstood me, but it was my fault. I didn't actually tell you what I'm going in as...I'm not gonna join as a pilot, I'm gonna be a Ground Electrical Technician, and I have all the grades I need already...surely an HNC/D would be a waste of time? I also get NVQs during my training.

I'd say GO FOR IT! I was at the same crossroad at 15 and I wanted to be a ground crew engineer too. Thankfully, my dad talked me out of that, since Yugoslavia was breaking apart at that time already. School for ground crew personnel was near Sarajevo and we all know what happened later there. Now I have steady job, and I'm thinking to go to sports aviation, anything, I just need to be near those winged things called airplanes.

But in the end the decision is only yours.

I can honestly say I never wanted to join any part of the armed forces. There are always more people trying to kill you rather that just little you trying to kill all of them :D

Don't join the infantry, whatever you do. The SA80-A2 is a piece of junk. Heckler-Koch company couldn't fix the thing, it's that bad. So, the Air Force is the best choice for you.
