Now, the answer to your question varies. It depeneds on what kind of class you like to play with.
So my answers are what I think, not what's the absolute best.

A good single-class is the Cavalier (Paladin kit). He/She gets great bonuses when fighting Dragons, Demons etc, they are 20% resistant to fire and acid, they are immune to Poison and Fear, they have great Paladin-abilities, and they can wield the best sword in the game.
Best if going solo.

A good Multi-class is the Fighter/Mage. They are good warriors, and can cast good spells if they're not wearing any armour.
Good NPCs:
Keldorn, Anomen, Aerie, Nalia, Jaheira.

A good Dual-class is the Berserker/Cleric. Great warrior, with the lovely ability to Enrage, and they can cast good spells while wearing armour. The Cleric also gets lovely spells in ToB.
This one is also best solo.

Well, Keldorn is a good NPC, but as your main character also is a Paladin, I suggest taking Minsc instead. He knows a few clerical spells, is a good tank, and is really funny! :D

I still think that the Cavalier is easier to play without NPCs, but it is totally up to you if you want them or not.
If you want NPCs to the Cavalier, I then suggest taking Minsc, Aerie, Anomen, Nalia and Jaheira.
All of them are good-aligned (except Jaheira who is True Neutral and Anomen who are Lawful Neutral), so they should fit well with your Cavalier. ;)

Ranged weapon are really good to have. The Cavalier cant use them, but yes, make Nalia use Shortbows.
Always good to have a man (or a woman ) in your back, defending you from distance. ;)

Sir Exxon - are you trying to lead a newbie to ruin - Soloing a cavalier is easier - only for very expirienced players I would say

My NPC-recomandations are: Minsc, Aerie, Jan Jansen, Yoshimo, Mazzy

Heh, that comment made me chuckle, but Sir Exxon, Ar-Cunin is right. Soloing any character is not for the faint of hearted, and definitely not something you do right from the start( unless you are masochistic).

Soloing is something that you absolutely do NOT recommend for a newbie to the game...it will turn them off completely. Soloing is what you do when you are so bored with the game that you are trying to find any sort of challenge you can.

sorry are you saying that *should* use multi/dual classing? I never used that... and I completed the game fine, always.
