Dell Moves Away From 'Dude' Ad Campaign
Oct. 15, 2002

NEW YORK (AP) - The Dell Dude is taking some time off. "Steven," the blond-haired guy who pushes Dell computers on TV, is moving aside at least for now.

Dell says it's trying something else with a new ad campaign - one less dude-like.

Dell's sales of personal computers have soared since "Steven" started pitching people with the catchphrase, "Dude, you're getting a Dell!"

Actor Ben Curtis has played the irascible pitchman for two years. He appears at the end of at least one of the new commercials. A Dell spokesman says the new ads don't spell the end of "Steven."

I love their catch phrase, "It's as easy as Dell."

I also loved the $600 check they sent me as an apology after billing me incorrectly and screwing with my checking account 6 months ago....lol. :D

Never seen any of those advertisements over here in the Netherlands, but my previous computer was a Dell. No complaints about it whatsoever, after 5 years it's still going strong. Well, in my younger brother's possession now anyways, I've passed on to a new, non-Dell computer. ;)

I've always liked the "Steven Dude" commercials myself. He really seems to "capture" the "teen image" perfectly.

Interestingly enough, he is from Chattanooga, TN. - which is only about a 2hr drive from my hometown. From what I've heard, he went to an open "casting call" held in Chattanooga for a Dell commercial and got the job while still a senior in high school.

Not too shabby.

I'd love their catch phrase too after sending me a $600 apology check. LoL! :D I think this company does a little bit to much advertising.

Actually the $600 wasn't easy as Dell, more like hard as hell to get.

But I can be a fanatic when necessary, so after several screw ups on their part, I stopped calling customer service and starting mailing the names and badge numbers of those people who promised, but neglected to fix my problem, as well as the case numbers they gave me each time I called to the corporate office. After the 3rd 10 page packet, they got finally got tired of "Delling" with me.

Good -- hard to say why, but he was starting to get on my nerves. I kept hoping the AFLAC duck would show up & kick his *&@!. Gotta admit though, my Dell's been running for 2 years now with no problems at all...

Last year a good friend of mine bought a Dell, they sent him three complete systems and charged him for only one. since then he moved and hasn't received any more new systems. he tried to contact Dell about both extra shipments and they said they had no record of the shippments and that he must be mistaken. all I could say to him is Dude You Got Dell,Dell,Dell. HE kept all three Pent 4,1.8 GIG computers His wife has one in the sewing room. He has the other two hooked up in his Game room.

He has joined the ranks of many commercial-based cultural icons, like the Taco Bell chihuahua and the Aflac duck.

I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not....
