ARLINGTON, Washington (AP) -- "Call 911! I have a hawk stuck to my arm!!"

It didn't take long for gas station customers to see Jamie Wing wasn't kidding.

A red-tailed hawk collided with Wing's pickup truck Thursday, and after she freed the bird's wing from the side-view mirror, the hawk invaded the truck, bit Wing's lip and then sank its talons into her right arm.

Wing, 38, said she threw a coat over the bird, tried without success to get it off her arm -- and then drove to the nearest highway exit.

"Every time you touched the bird, it gripped harder," she said. "There was a point where it got so painful that I was going to reach down and break its neck myself, but I love animals and I realized the bird was in shock and pain."

Firefighters administered morphine to help ease Wing's pain, and two women from the nearby Sarvey Wildlife Center pulled the hawk off her arm.

Wing was treated at a local hospital for puncture wounds on her right arm, hand and thumb. "I feel lucky it didn't chew me up more," she said.

The hawk had to be euthanized because both wings were broken too badly to heal or be repaired, said Kestrel SkyHawk, who cares for birds of prey at the center and is on its board of directors.

Nope, it's for real, happened just a few miles from where I live. I've been to the rescue center here, and Kestrel is a real person. The interesting part is that Wing is a major animal lover, and had considered killing the bird at one point, because of the pain of it's talons in her arm, but decided against it. That is some kinda fortitude to manage to drive while a hawk has a grip on your arm. That's one very tough lady.

I suspect that Kestral Skyhawk is likely one of two very different types of people.

A. Hippie, tree hugger, nature nut who changed his/her name
I also call these types of people "Dedicated, Natural Conservationists" depending on how pretentious they are.

or

B. A Native American

No kidding! Not only are birds of prey's talons large but they are sharp as razors! It takes little effort for them to pierce human skin!
If it was attached to her hand, unless she has a lot of padding, there should have been broken bones as well.
I find the story a little hard to believe but had I been in the same position, I'd have tried to do the same thing... there just would have been lots of tears, some crying and probably a little screaming too. :D

I agree...hehe lots of screaming and waving of my other arm...I would have crashed This weekend I did a 10 mile stretch of the Apalachian trail (near Fredrick MD) and we saw a lot of hawks up close and turkey vultures and buzzards...those buggers are BIG! I would hate to have one of them latch onto me.
