Ok this was the first time i had a mge as my main. I cast familer and used in him battle I then slept the group to recover spells and hp when i came back no familer. Now i checked my hp and con to see fi maybe I took a lose there and he died while i slept but nope they wree all the same. Seconf everytime i try to cast find familer it says one has already been summon? I moved the game over to mp and tried to replace myself with an ealier copy from before the familer but i still get the same message when i try to cast it. any idea how to fix this?

Check your pack, he might be in there, i have never slept with my familiar out of my pack, for that matter, i have never used him in combat, whenever i play a mage i go CN so i can get the cat, who is better than half the theives in the game, and only take him out when he is theiving so as to assure no damage comes to him, so i don't know if they revert to your pack when you sleep, but that is my only thought on this, hmmmmmmm, something for me to ponder over

Don't have a pack or bag of holding. The first thing I did was look to see if he was in my inventory. Oh well

That varies. Each Mage will get different Familiars, depending on their magic-school. Like an Abjurer gets a different Familiar then a Conjurer, etc.
There are many types of Familiars, rabbit, cat, etc, and each of these Familiars bring sspecial abilities to the Mage who summoned them.
This only works for the Protagonist, though. ;)

Actually your familiar is determined by your alignment
Alignment/Familiar
LG/Pseudo-Dragon
NG/Pseudo-Dragon
CG/Fairy Dragon
LN/Ferret
TN/Rabbit
CN/Cat
LE/Imp
NE/Dust Mephit
CE/Quaist

The best are for HP and Fighting Pseudo-Dragon
and The cat is also very good because he Can use all of the theif skills except Set Trap and Pick Locks (You can't increase the stats but at the begining of the game he's a better theif than anyone), he also has -4 AC
