- - EU vote on GM labelling - we won! (http://www.ironworksforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80068)

I am delighted to report that the EU voted 'yes' to labelling all foods with more than 0.5% GM content. This only the first phase, and I do hope that subsequent phases will go through without modification - there may be problems, due to the huge pro-GM, anti labelling lobbies, which include the whole biotech industry.

Looks like this could turn into a massive trade war with America. The US steel protectionism and farming subsidies will be nothing to this one!

I await developments with interest, and some anxiety. Well, I won't be just sitting on my fanny awaiting developments. I shall be out there doing my bit, ie. letters and lots of jumping up and down if necessary.

But HURRAH! anyway. It's a good start.

er right... you do know there are children in this forumn? lol, *grins* hehe, if anything, it'll start costing MILLIONS if the US wanna trade with us, without breaking these new laws. Well I suppose the EU has done ONE good thing then, lol. Im happy, now to ban GM foods from Britian altogether... oh, my prejudices are showing again...

That's great, so as a consumer I will now which ones are the best and be able to ensure that I get the GM stuff - you beauty.

Unfortunately, most food producers will get around it by making the new labels, but getting the definitions changed. That's how they were able to sneak irradiated food into the marketplace.

It's a bit tougher to find, but we shop at organic-certified farm-to-markets. The farmers bring their stuff directly to these mom-and-pop stores, and we get them without the processing. :D It's interesting, organic, natural, stuff is not nearly as pretty, but it tastes so much better. Hey Rudy, Im pro-irradiation of food stuffs, any clue as to how many people are killed annually by contamination from spoiled or rotting food?? its a big number. After years of testing no problems have been traced back to irradiated foods causing test animals to mutate into Godzilla.

On a slightly different note...what is GM?

And Im pretty sure that the US is not going to go belley up in a trade war with the EU.

GM = Genetically Modified - and while I don't often find myself agreeing with you Magik ole buddy, your last point is indeed cogent.
