Cloudy's Cafe

Come in, be welcome, be comfortable, be yourself

Welcome to Cloudy's Cafe, a place to have a cup of coffee or a good
darjeeling and the finest in conversation and camaraderie.

The proprietor asks that you follow a few simple guidelines:

this is a real conversation zone, not a role-play zone

[i]* no flaming; if you disagree with a viewpoint expressed by any patron, please do so in a civil manner
* any topic is fair game, but keep posts to the standards that Ziroc has set for the entire forum, please (ie: foul language is not appropriate and things should be suitable for all audiences)
-a side note from Cloudy: I see this as a place for those short
conversations about a new baby or the latest soccer fiasco, not for things that are big enough to warrant their own threads, by all means give those things the space they need and post separately!
* Please, no one word or smiley posts (Ziroc has declared them 'real spam' and the proprietor doesn't want the reputuation of "good spam" to suffer!)
* do feel free to be serious or silly and enjoy the company of others while you are here. By all means POST if you have something to say, even to start another topic , we can handle multiple chats, we're a CAFE!!! But be courteous and don't disrupt a conversation just to disrupt it.[i]

Come on in! The bar is stocked with coffees, teas, juices and waters from around the world. And purple napkins, of course!

The lighting is low, the golden oak counters and tables glow with inviting warmth. Near the window, the lighting is brighter, as comfy, plush leather armchairs wait for those who'd like to read a book while relaxing to music or just lazily watch the world go by.

Cloudy,
your hostess [img]graemlins/ladyhearts.gif[/img]

Just to continue on from the old thread, the convo was about accents and bad British ones in games etc.

I thought the Gaelan one in BG2 was hysterical... I mean I laughed and wanted to say "Are you serious?! "

Epona, Romanian, huh? :D I passed for Polish or Hungarian in Russia because they refused to believe they'd actually MEET an American at that time (the 80's) and my Russian accent is good enough that they were sure I was simply from another Eastern block country where I learned it in school or spoke a related languaged (like Polish). I usually enjoyed watching their eyes get big when I'd say "no, I'm an American" LOL We had some great converstations after that! Although a few just sat and stared..

Hmm.. you know I never really thought about the game voices and accents. I mean some you just cringe at anyway, but it never occured to me how silly and awful they must sound to natives, LOLOLOL! Did you just cringe if they talked or was it bad enough to turn the sound off?!

I haven't played PST yet, is it better on the voices than BG2 is?

Are you with the CIA, comrad Cloudski ? :D :D

Epona 06-17-2002 10:27 AM

LOL Amber! I only speak a little bit of Romanian - enough to get by in restaurants & bars, a few niceties of conversation, that sort of thing. The vocabulary is pretty easy, it's a Latin based language (in fact it's the closest modern language to Latin) so if you know a bit of Italian, Spanish or Portuguese you could probably pick it up really easy. Some of the vocabulary draws from Magyar, Slavonic and Turkish influences. The grammar is a real stinker unless you're *good* at Latin, in which case it makes perfect sense because it is essentially the same. Unlike in English, pronunciation of groups of characters is consistent so there aren't any bizarre inconsistencies to grapple with.

Mostly bad Brit accents in games will just make me cringe, but as I mentioned before the William Wallace campaign in AOEII got switched off before the introductory monologue was over - it was sheer hell listening to it. If there is a really bad accent in a movie it might make me stop watching. One of the worst things ever was those Loony Tunes cartoons (I think it was those ones?) which sometimes had supposedly English people using phrases like 'cor blimey guv'nor' but spoken in a posh English accent NO NO NO!!!! WRONG!

Cloudbringer 06-17-2002 10:28 AM

johnny,

HAHA! Nope... but I bet they have a whopping big file on me in FBI headquarters. ;) I studied Russian in High School and majored in Russian language and literature in college. Both my BA and my MA are in that field. So I studied in Russia for two different semesters, a total of 8 months or so.

Laura! LOL I've actually taken four years of Latin in High School and we had a Romanian leturer and his family in the department I worked for (Slavic Languages and Literatures) many years back. He ended up teaching French for a while. He could understand my Russian and English so I never bothered learning any Romanian!

Nigel, why did you even bother playing that William Wallace campaign, it was a learning campaign. Don't tell me you didn't play age of empires before that ? :D
