A bill that would ban the sale of fireworks to the public has gone into the Parliamentary ballot.

It is being promoted by Wellington Central MP Marian Hobbs who says it follows a number of approaches by concerned citizens and from animal welfare groups like the SPCA.

Ms Hobbs believes the fireworks of today are very different to what they used to be. She says they may not be rockets but they come pretty close to them and create havoc if their trajectory takes them into a dry hillside.

She says they are much more potent than they were and cause too much distress when in the hands of the irresponsible.

The Government has already warned the public that if there is a repeat of the mayhem in previous years the sale of them will be banned.

Ms Hobbs says most civilised countries do not sell them to the public.

In fact, firework sales to the public are allowed - with some restrictions - in all but five of the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland and most of western Europe.

The goverment has warned that if there are any problems with the use of fireworks this year, then the ban of the sale of fireworks to the public will be put into place immediately following(no exceptions!). And something new- the making and letting off of 'sparkler bombs' can now come with a imprisonment of up to eight years for charges including attempted arson, intention to cause damage and possession of explosives.

Ms Hobbs is a dumb bitch. M80's aren't even available anymore for instance. Now THOSE were fireworks.

"Be good or we'll take more of your freedom" is the cry of a government that no longer fears its people. Times are sad indeed.

Depends on where you're at Timber, you can get most anything on an AmerInd reservation, and the story sounds like the speaker is Aussie (or at least somewhere in that region) availability may be different than it is here.
