I can't find the original thread, but seem to remember someone asking about President Musharaff's efforts to fight terrorism.

It appears they've had enough of subduing the tribes and a peace deal has been reached. link.

Quote:

Under the accord, the Pakistani military promises to end major operations in the area.

It will pull most of its soldiers back to military camps, but will still operate border check-points.

Tribal elders held weeks of consultations

Over the summer the military met other conditions, releasing a number of tribesmen in an apparent goodwill gesture to the militants and withdrawing soldiers from new check-posts.

Local Taleban supporters, in turn, have pledged not to harbour foreign militants, launch cross-border raids or attack Pakistani government troops or facilities.

Observers say meeting these conditions could be difficult, as the Taleban has support on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghan border.

You do realize that someday Kashmir has to be fought over. It may be today, it may be tomorrow, but it must happen, and it will happen.

Kashmir conflict is between Pakistan and India. What does that have to do with this news?

Tomorrow is never a certainty.

This is just realpolitik by Musharraf. His army was getting its arse handed to it in the mountains, plus he had some Taliban-influenced clerics in that Pashtun tribal region which had already been calling for a jihad against the Pak army. Plus twice assassins linked to the Taliban had tried to assassinate him. This was an act of pragmatic self-interest.
