Read between the lines. The Forest Service is in the palm of the timber industry. It gives away the rights to log vast amounts of land out there for free. It's a big giveaway to big industry.

Citing studies, the Fish and Wildlife Service said the greatest threat facing the spotted owl is wildfire. The agency said the best way to protect the owl is through forest fuel reductions.
Translation: in order to protect the Owl we must cut down its habitat.

Clue in, n00bs.

One of my best friends in High School's father was a lumberjack for a long time, and he admitted quite plainly that the problem is that neither side is willing to concede anything and both are asking for far to much from the other, eco-nuts don't want anything done to the forests (which means forest fires go unchecked because fuel is rampant) the timber industry wants more wood and it takes a long time for replanted sapplings to grow into trees, etc etc. no easy answers and lots of problems with most solutions.

Besides, everyone knows that ecologists like big fires
