Nuclear physics is a relatively young science. Humans created the first man-made nuclear reactor only about 60 years ago, in 1942. However, nuclear reactors existed on the planet two billion years ago. So far, science knows of 17 nuclear reactors located in Gabon, an African country.

I heard from a friend that there had recently been unearthed in France roman-era power plants, what they were used for is still unknown IIRC.

An interesting story and a new addition to the "quirks of nature" category.

Morgeruat, do you have any links for the Roman power plants? If not, I'll see if I can dig up any. If real, they would go into the "historical anomoly" category, like the Baghdad batteries (medeival electricity) and the Antikythera Mechanism (ancient gear-wheel calendar).
