A letter from the #2 Al Qaeda man Al Zawahiri to Zarqawi has been intercepted. The letter is of note because it details the future course of actions that Zawahiri (and by extension Bin Laden) desire to see in action in Iraq. As well as long-term goals for Al Qaeda in Iraq and elsewhere.

How can we know it's real?

Why do I keep seeing this thread title and thinking "girl interrupted."???

I'm sceptical more of the fact it's addressed to Al-Zarqhawi - something of a nebulous figure at best and one who many believe is simply used as a convenient public relations 'figurehead' by the coalition for the public to easily identify with.
A bit of googling turns up the official US government press release. There's also a BBC article with nothing to add. They do point out however that the last letter said to have been intercepted (in 2004) never had its "authenticity confirmed beyond doubt". |
They say it's fake, no source as of yet though, at least not one i could post here, it's in Dutch. An Al Qaeda spokesman claims they know nothing of said letter, and that it's probably Pentagon propaganda.

I think it's more likely that they send multiple copies of a letter, with the real message encoded in it, but then again if I was running a worldwide terror network being hunted by the most powerful government in the world I'd be a bit paranoid.
Whether or not our code breakers can break code written in Arabic I don't know, I would also like to know who the translators were and where their loyalties lie... |
