The reason that the soldier was not tried for intended murder (that info did not make to the english translation, i have picked it from the hebrew site of haaretz), is that the soldier said that he shot near the head of the Uk citizen, in orer to scary him. The judges decided that he should have known that he may miss and thus kill him.

What exactly does being sentenced to 8 years mean in this case? Is it like the US criminal system where good behavior can result in early release, or will he actually be in prison for 8 years?

Good question. I do not know. If he will be spending his 8 years in military prison, i seriously doubt that he will be released sooner than 8 years. If he will be in a normal one...

I simply do not know.
