The attack on Iraq has hardened Arab opinion against the U.S.
The "shock and awe" images of flaming mushroom clouds rising over the Baghdad skyline, spilling from television sets each evening, have hardened already skeptical Arab opinion about British and U.S. efforts to depose Saddam and his henchmen. The first days of military action sparked violent protests throughout the Middle East. In Sanaa, Yemen, a crowd of more than 3,000 tried to storm the U.S. embassy, chanting "Death to America!" Two demonstrators were shot dead. Police in Cairo, Bahrain, and Lebanon also clashed with protestors. I saw a funny article at www.theonion.com about MOAB that huge bomb. Capable of creating 1500 terrorists with a single blast it said.. :D

Well this is nothing new. Anti-US feelings will be rampant regardless of what the US does in the Middle East.
Before 9/11, the US wasn't at "war" with anyone in the Middle East, yet we were attacked. Maybe the US should have gone into Afghanistan before 9/11 to deal with Bin laden but the UN council would have probably vetoed that idea too. |
I don't think the UN ever accepted the former Afghan government as legit. I doubt they would have vetoed it...

Oh, please note that I'm not trying to contradict you in a ny way. I just quoted you to lead into another example of how the UN and many world governments are perfectly happy to allow Talebanesque governments to roll on unchallenged, as long as they only kill their own people. Hussein killed people next door. So did Hitler, and after a few years, we didn't stand for that ;) And, of course, the USA didn't exactly seem eager to rid the world of the Taleban until they became a personal threat, did they? This isn't an attack on the USA, tyhe UN, or anyone else - just an illustration that people (and by that, i mean governments and governmental organisations) are perfectly content to ignore vile regimes to continue unchallenged until they become a personal threat. It's just the way of the world, and nobody is immune. |
