Death and destruction in my wake
So many lives I was told to take
Why did I come to this combat zone?
Now I’m taking the last train home.

The last day dawned bright and clear
The sounds of victory in our ears.
We did not see the covered mines
We just could not get out in time.

All around me my brothers fell,
And than I realized that this is Hell.
I turned around and tried to run,
It was at that moment I saw the sun.

For a moment I was blind,
Than hard hit from behind.
I landed on the ground with a thud,
Face down in the thickening mud.

I felt the barrel against my head
I realized than that I was dead.
My last thoughts were of mom and home
And what dad said on the telephone

“Fight for our country through think and thin
To prove that we will never give in.”
Oh how the government contrives to mislead
Now the youth of our nation fall and bleed.

As the colors of dusk began to soften
They lowered the lid to my coffin
How I wish I could let them know
That I am on the last train home.

I sincerely hope that as many as possible, on both sides, make it home to their families and loved ones.
