I just wondered has anyone seen Band of Brothers on the BBC its 9pm on Fridays and follows a unit of paratroopers from their training before D-Day to the end of the war. Easy Company they're caled.
Anyway I was watching it the other day and the men in the unit were being shot to pieces and it occurred to me then that its all to easy for us to send soldiers off to war when we don't have to worry about the consequences from our nice safe houses. I think war is the most horrible thing we can inflict on anyone personally and although I agree we should be taking action against Osama bin Laden and his nasty little cronies, any military action should be short and sharp and restrict casualties as much as possible. I also think a lot of people don't appreciate the consequences of what is going to happen in Afghanistan in the very near future. I.e a lot of people are going to be killed in the most disgsting manner imaginable-mines, booby traps, mortar fire it truly sucks. People are going to their deaths and have absolutely no dignity when they do die. I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make I suppose its we ought to be doing something but lets try and think of the poor sods who are out their-and by that I mean the civilians being accidently blown up as well as our soldiers, I for one wouldn't swap places with them for the world. I don't like war and I also don't like it that I belive have no other choice in what we are doing at present, I just hope we get it over with quickly and we don't run into Ramadan (Hope I spelled it right) or all hell will break loose. Incidently watch Band of Brothers its very good. |
Dint see it.
But Easy Co. is the name of Sgt. Rocks posse! War sucks...makes good tv. |

I can't speak for "alot of people" but I do appreciate the bad effects of war upon society. I understand that there were thousands of families that lost fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters etc during that and many other wars. I appreciate the fact that people of German and Japanese descent were placed in camps during that time. They were stripped of their properties and most of their possesions.
I would never enjoy the glorification of war. I study it and enjoy reading about it, but I never look past the bad effects. To say that "nothing good can come of a war" seems to be an oversimplification in my opinion. There were many necessary wars in our history. I write from the American viewpoint and my nation was created because of a war. Without it, we would still be a colony. Regarding Afghanistan, I think that our soldiers and the many soldiers of our allies will fight with dignity and die with the same if necessary. The death of civilians is very tragic and I fully acknowledge that. But, an unfortunate side effect of war is the loss of the civilian population. Think of the fire bombing of Dresden during WWII. We had tried to keep an honorable way of fighting at first, but it ended up quite poorly. This conflict with Afghanistan is starting poorly because of their tactics. We may have to emulate them to beat them. If I were called upon to provide a solution to this issue, I would have the opponents thumb wrestle for supremecy. But that's just me. ------------------ "I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." -Robert McCloskey http://www.wizardrealm.com/images/hs2.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...lil-ribbon.gif

Token lackwit of HADB
Sycophant to the Wolf of Azure Hue
Long lost brother of DragonMage
Bearer of a work of art created by Sazerac
Jeg burde blive gennembanket for min flatulens.[/list] |
War is more of a blight on humanity than cancer, but both must be treated in the same way with prompt, invasive, and destructive measures.
