NATO is currently studying a US plan to establish a new and permanent peace force within the alliance, Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has told Radio Netherlands. The plan for such a force, officially called a 'NATO Stabilization and Reconstruction Force' is reportedly based upon the experiences of the multinational forces in Iraq.

According to its originators at the US National Defense University in Washington D.C., the force should count some 70 thousand troops and civilian employees, with the United States and the other NATO member states each providing half that number. In 2001, the National Defense University also proposed the establishment of a rapidly-deployable 'NATO Response Force', which became partially operational last October. At present, NATO does not have units geared towards post-conflict peacekeeping and reconstruction activities.

It's a good idea. The UN needs to have the same thing, and has said so for years. Then they get bogged down in who pays for what and who controls it.

We shall see if anything comes of it.
