The US army is to launch an investigation into allegations of torture at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba. Most of the 500 suspected terrorists being held at the base were arrested in Afghanistan.

The investigation was prompted by a series of emails sent by FBI agents that were published last month. The agents reportedly witnessed prisoners being beaten and tortured with burning cigarettes.

Others were shackled hand and foot in a fetal position on a floor for up to 24 hours and denied permission to use a toilet. Other forms of torture included locking prisoners up in sweltering rooms for long periods or exposing them to loud music and flashing lights for several hours.

Many of the suspects have been held at Guantanamo for years without being charged.

You know.. we could use give them a hug and a footmassage, and they might spill their guts. Don't laugh.. has it ever been tried before? ;)

I'm sure i just heard one of Bush's advisors at some sort of judicial enquiry trying to justify ignoring the Geneva Convention there!!

Now come on guys, they either are or are not military prisoners, you can't pick the bits of military and civilian law that suits you.

The flimsy rationalization they are trying to use is that "Al Queda operatives are not soldiers, therefore not covered by the Geneva Convention". It doesn't matter--they are still human and we are supposed to be acting better than that.

I personally spit on anyone who rationalizes the use of torture.

Right on. They should take this deadly serious, because it is.

From working with survivors of politically motivated torture (which one could argue this would count as if substantiated), I've come to know that torture is a means of oppression rather than a means of information gathering. The answer given to any question under torture will be the one that ends the torture. The questioner would only be validating what s/he already thinks to be true. It's pointless and beyond cruel.
