Evidence has emerged that Ken Bigley managed to escape from captivity shortly before his death.

Sources in the Iraqi Government confirmed reports that he fled with the help of one of his guards but was caught soon after and killed.

Some sources indicate the engineer, armed with a gun, could have been free for several hours.

The Sunday Times reported that British intelligence had bribed the guard.

Special church services have been held in Mr Bigley's home city of Liverpool and around the country.

Mr Bigley's Thai wife Sombat, speaking from Bangkok where she lived with him, said: "No words can express the agony I feel for the loss of my husband Ken.

"He was a good man and a loving, caring husband. He went to Iraq to help the Iraqi people."

A film of the murder was originally handed to the Arab TV station Abu Dhabi.

But the network said it would not air or release the footage.

Mr Bigley was murdered by Abu Mussab al Zarqawi's Tawhid and Jihad group three weeks after he was captured with two Americans.

The US citizens were killed immediately.

I've read about that, he was so close to escape. I really hoped something would be done to save this man.

Well I am actually pleasantly surprised by that. Im glad to see that Blair did actually bother to do something in the end.

I don't know about the guard Wellard, but his fate couldn't be good if he was caught.

Why are you thankhing me? The two guards that were with Ken were beheaded too.
