Ive always avoided the complications of dual and multi-class, but now i'm looking into it. I know fighters to anything are good but you lose thaco and you get behind. So i thought of the mage\thief, and im wondering when i should dual, what i should roll(i now 18 intelligence and 18 dex) and which class i should start off with.

Start of with a Thief. IMO, there are much more use for them in the early part of the game. And then maybe dual to a Mage in level 13. ;)
And I think you only have to roll 16 int, and 16 dex. I might be wrong about this though.

The minimum stat-requirements for dual-classing a Thief to a Mage are 15 DEX and 17 INT. Of course, two 18's are better.
If you aim for a Thief -> Mage, consider making him/her a Swashbuckler -> Mage. If you dual, you can choose a kit for your starting class, and the bonuses a Swashbuckler gets are really helpful to a Mage-type character. For instance, as a Mage you can't cast spells while wearing armor, so the AC-bonuses are particularly nice.

in D&D, it says that you need at least a 17 in the prime requesites of the class that you are dualing from, and too. so you would need a 17 dex and int, in order to make a dual class thief/mage. this is my best thief/mage (playing right now)

Myrrath Samoiman
Human, Male SwashBuckler-15, Mage 22
Str-13
Dex-18
Con-16
Int-18
Wis-13
Chr-13
This lets him learn any spells, get all thief abilities, good armor class, and has a 16 con to get max hp's. i have the level 50 level cap though, so im going to make an AWESOME thief/mage, lol. I plan to make a Kensai/SwashBuckler. in pnp, you can dual kits, so you should be able too here as well. SK to the rescue!!!!

Nope. You need 15 in the prime requisite of the class you're Dualing from, and 17 in the class you are Dualing to. So a Mage->Thief needs 15 INT and 17 DEX, a Thief->Mage needs 15 DEX and 17 INT, and a Fighter->Cleric needs 15 STR and 17 WIS. (And a Fighter->Druid also needs 17 CHA, which I just find really odd. Straight Druids are perfetly fine with only 15 CHA.)

I second the motion to take the Swashbuckler kit. Definitely the best if you're planning to go Mage, although Backwhacking with the Staff of the Magi does have its merits.

Morgan, my version of Shadowkeeper will let me choose a kit for my 2nd class, but in doing so, I must give up any existing kits, so a Kensai->Swashbuckler would be out of the question. Does your version of SK allow this?
