Is correct to say american only to the person who live in USA?
America is so big... from Canada to Argentina then the people from Mexico or Canada, or Brasil or Argentina, they are American. In the 19th century Argentina was called America for the Italian or Spanish people who left their home in Italy or Spain to take jobs in this country, here in Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia and Argentina was called America since 16th century to middle of 20th century, and the people from there were called American. Then Why the people call America to USA and not to the other countries? Ah! if the people from IberoAmerican countries are called spanish (the brasilians too and I dont understand it) then the people from USA and Canada will should be called British wont them? (Excuse me my english I'm learning) |
For that reason, why does the United States refer to America? Aren't the Estados Unidos de Mexicanos also "united states?" Aren't the UK countries "united states?" Are EU countries "united states?"
So, taken altogether, you have the "United States of America." Well, Canada is a collection of united states (well, except the Quebecois) and it's in America, as is Mexico. Are we in the USA merely victims of choosing a generic name? Seriously, though, few and far between arre the people who take insult at the USA being called "America." Most folks realize it's a convention adopted to refer to the USA. Most folks realize no one is pretending other countries aren't in America. We just simply have the most boring name. ;) |
Like TL says it is hard to find a word to describe people from the US.
USAiens United Stateians All the names I can think of sound kind of cheesy so it is much simpler to just call them Americans. Single named countries, or those that have a distict name are easy. What would you call them? I guess the early founding forefathers just didn't have much creativity. Canada is some Native American word that means "The Village", some explorer thought they were refering to the name of the country. Guess that make us "The village people". [ 03-08-2004, 02:31 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |
