WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush urged the United Nations on Saturday to enact tougher controls to stop the spread of nuclear weapons as he warned Americans about the dangers of deadly weapons.
Bush has made national security a key theme of his re-election campaign. Earlier this week, he unveiled proposals to stop a nuclear black market as he detailed the network run by Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's atomic program. The president suggested limiting the transfer of nuclear technology to those countries that forswear atomic weapons. In his radio address, Bush invoked memories of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States as he warned of "the prospect of even worse dangers" that could arise if nuclear weapons fall into the wrong hands. "The possibility of secret and sudden attack with weapons of mass destruction is the greatest threat before humanity today," he said. "Last fall at the United Nations I proposed a new Security Council resolution requiring all states to criminalize proliferation, enact strict export controls and secure all sensitive materials within their borders," Bush said. "I urge the Council to pass these measures quickly," he said. Bush, who has faced criticism over the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, has seen his poll numbers drop recently. He cited the existence of banned weapons as a main reason for going to war against Iraq last year. © Reuters 2004. All Rights Reserved. |
The funny thing is that he (Bush) happens to have most of the world's WOMD at his beck and call ;) . Makes me wonder though what the purpose of so many missiles is nowadays. It used to be that there was the bogey of the Soviets to counter and offset. That was the nuclear deterrent age where if you fire em at me you'll get em straight back atchoo. Nowadys the biggest threat seems to derive from the potential for terrorists to smuggle in a single dirty device. Heaven forbid that something like that ever happens - it's something that only a madman could wish, but if it did - where do the retaliation missiles get launched? Like the logical assumption is nowhere, well, unless we are going to regain faith in all those intelligence agencies about the world that had such overwhelming and conclusive proof before we dropkicked the Sadman.
On a brighter note - I finally watched the movie that caused all the fuss. After watching Bowling for Columbine just now I ejected the DVD thinking that documentary deserved an Oscar. Then I put in the bonus DVD and found that it did win one ;) . Congratulations to the Academy for getting it right. Now we just need a Peter Jackson best Director award in the upcoming champagne shindig. |
Great! Bush can start by dismantling OUR WMDs.
When he does that, I'll be willing to hear what else he has to say. |
