Hi all

I'm a total beginner at RPG gaming, and this is my first attempt at baldur's gate and I'm finding it difficult to kill mages and wizards. I 've got through the dungeon and am in waukeen's promenade and am now in a room above den of the seven vales, trying to kill some guys, a sorceror and mephit but die everytime. Has anyone got any tricks or tips to help a beginner.

Thanks
Kim

Well first of all welcome to Ironworks!
As for your question I think that that party is a little too tough for you right now.I suggest you return later and kick their butts!
If you want to deal with them now I suggest throwing in all damaging spells such as fireball before you enter. Then concentrate on the Imp which cats confusion and then to the mage.A good way to disrupt spells is magic missile.

That is a VERY difficult fight for this stage of the game, and you may be better off putting it off for a little bit until you pick up some people with more firepower.

Some strategies: Web or Entangle the entire area and whale on them with missiles and spells. Also: don't engage the dwarf in one-on-one combat; say you're going to leave, then cast the "buffing" spells on your characters (Barkskin, Bless, etc.)THEN attack. If you have one of the wands from Irenicus' Dungeon, use it (Cloudkill or Fireball on the Mage and Imp.

Personally, I'd wait until I picked up a Cleric (Anomen, Aerie) and another Mage (Aerie or Nalia, or Edwin if you want to wait that long)...you'll find them in various places in Athkatla.

Aerie (Mage/Cleric)can be found in the Circus Tent in Waukeen's Promenade
Anomen (Fighter/Cleric)can be found in the Copper Coronet in the Slums
Nalia (Thief/Mage) can be found in the Copper Coronet in the Slums
Edwin (Conjurer (Specialist Mage)) can be found in Mae'var's Guild in the Docks
Viconia (Cleric) can be found in the Government District
Jan (Thief/Illusionist) can be found in the Government District
Keldorn (Paladin) can be found in the sewers below the Temple District

Those are the easiest ones to find first off. Figure out who you want in your party, then go back and take on the 7 vales.

Hope this helps!

this IS a hard battle but i did it at a low lvl (skill lol). what i did was i chalenged them right away then just sent my part in. i didnt do anything special at all.. i used all my reg spells and such and won after a few trys lol. towards the end when about 2 or 3 were left i charmed the dwarf on my team and he helped a LOT! when you first get in there charm him to your team and he can take out his buddies fast as you can cast a magic missle!

as a dwarf, though, his saving throws are low, especially v. spells and v. death, so you probably would need a lucky Dire Charm or a decent Domination. that is true for most people. However, i have noticed that, while some people can be charmed or Healed for some effect, (Glacias, Yakman, etc.) no amount of charming will get a Dominated Shadow Thief to leave you alone.

A Note of Warning: The Wands you obtain from Irenicus's Dungeon all have only 1 charge left. If you use them, Poof! Gone. Sell them to a store, then buy (or steal) them back. They'll be fully recharged.

I agree with leaving this fight for later--I'd avoid it until I had a Tank with an AC of -10 or better, to keep Mencar Pebblecrusher (the Dwarf) busy.

It's a fairly small room, so combining a few Potions of Absorbtion with liberal use of Lightning magics should work well.

Yes--use immobilizing spells such as Web, Hold, Stinking Cloud, Entangle, even Sleep. Tossing in a Greater Malison couldn't hurt, either. Note: Make it a priority to immobilize and KILL the Thief.
