What the hell is this all ablout:

"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me because, as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know.

"We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.

"But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know."

Now who would say a thing like this?? ;)

I think that "I think that gay marriage is something that should be between a man and a woman," should have won.

What a fascinatng statement. I agree that there can be known unknowns--you don't know what CD is currently playing in my stereo, for example. However, can there actually be "unknown unknowns"? In order not to know that you know nothing about something (no, I am not trying for a gobbledygook award myself), you can't even know that the "something" exists. It would have to be something so completely foreign to you that you had never even considered it being a possibility before, like dating Belle. You who are reading this had never before considered the idea of dating her, thus it would count as an "unknown unknown"--you didn't even know that you didn't know what a date with Belle would be like, so it never entered your mind as a possibility. I answered my own question.

Why was this nominated for a gobbeldygook award, when it makes sense?

Is my admitting that it makes sense a good thing or a bad thing?

Well I am thinking Azred that you are describing is more of an incognisant unknown as opposed to an unknown unknown. Pardon my interruption, but it was an important and necessary distinction that I feel duty bound to observe .

If you play it backward it will probably say: Paul is Dead.

Guess I spend to much time writing computerese... all these statements make perfect sense to me and it appears he covers almost all his bases (all viable permutations)

Known Knowns - things that we know... and we know that we know them.
Known Unknowns - things that we don't know... and we know we don't know them.
Unknown Unknowns - things that we don't know... and we don't know that we don't know them.

the only one he missed :
Unknown Knowns - things we don't know that we know... but we know them.

All the above situations are possible.

That's ok. I am not certain that Rumsfeld and "cognizance" are in the same ballpark.

Hmmm...

Remember that episode of taxi where the Christopher Loyd character sits down at a piano and starts playing, really well... then he says "Hey, I didn't know I could play the piano!"

I think a more-better example would be if a bank was being robbed as you drove by but you didn't know it at the time. The cops come on TV looking for people who were near the bank when the robbery occurred. You know you didn't see any robbers but you go down and talk to them and they get you to recall a car that was parked in a strange spot right in front of the bank doors. That was important information you knew but didn't know you knew until the cop interviewed you and jarred that memory loose.
