Swedish foreign minister stabbed

Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh has been stabbed in an attack in a Stockholm department store.
She suffered wounds in the chest, stomach and arms. She has been in surgery for several hours, undergoing treatment for internal bleeding and liver damage.

The attack comes days before Swedes vote in a referendum on whether to join the euro. Ms Lindh had been vigorously campaigning for a Yes vote.

Both the Yes and No campaigns have suspended their activities following the attack.

"The attack on her is an attack on our open society and because of this I am feeling great anger and dismay," said Prime Minister Goran Persson.

Ms Lindh had been shopping unaccompanied by bodyguards when the attack took place at around 1600 local time (1400GMT).

She was carried from the Nordiska Kompaniet store on a stretcher.

"She laid on the floor and it looked as if a tall man, wearing a peaked cap, was hitting her," eyewitness Hanna Sundberg told AP news agency.

"But when he ran away, he threw away a knife."

Police were said to be searching for a man wearing a camouflage jacket who fled from the store.

"There is nothing pointing at a political motive right now," said police spokesman Bjoern Pihlblad.

However, Mr Persson said security had been tightened around government buildings.

Ms Lindh, 46, one of Sweden's most popular politicians, has been foreign minister since 1998. She is married with two children.

In 1986, Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was shot dead as he walked home with his wife in Stockholm.

The killing has never formally been solved, although a man cleared of the crime later wrote to a newspaper confessing.

This is not good at all, last I've heard she got severe abdominal wounds.
It's getting late here (1am) but I'll make an update in the morning.

Let us all remember that Scandinavia too has it share of right wing fanatics.

Yes it is and just three days before a referendum whether to join the Euro or not.

The assailant might have been caught on tape from on of the video cameras on the mall she was attacked in so hopefully this will give the police some leads.

Right wing, left wing or neutral - who knows?

The motive could be non-political (but I do not think so).

Anyhow - it brings back bad memories of the murder on Oluf Palme.

Yeah it could be an unhinged left-wing fanatic (like in the Pim Fortuiyn case) as well. She had recieved a fair bit of criticism from the ("consevative") far left over her sucking up to the EU.

My main point is that I don't believe there is any plan or conspiracy behind this. Only a single lunatic acting on his own impulses.

So what's new? Has anyone found out the reason for this murder? Politics? Or is it still unknown? Was Lindh as "controversal" as Palme?

Anna Lindh wasn't really the politician who made alot of enemies, I've never actually heard anyone say something bad about her, not even the far leftists (the party she worked for, "Socialdemokraterna" (social-democrats) is left-wing).
Right now nothing much is happening, most people are in shock and the assailant is yet to be apprehended. Things will probarbly be alot clearer when they do get him.

There has been a very heated debate in Sweden regarding the Euro and Anna Lindh was a front figure for the pro-Euro side. The political party she was a member of, the Socialdemocrats, has been pro-Euro even though every member don't agree with the Prime Minister's way. It has been a very divided party.

I just heard from a press conference the police recently held that they believe the murder was planned. An assassination in other words.
