I would say Texas and Alaska are larger, but I could be wrong.</font>

Then wouldn't he have said the countries most populous state? Not largest?

However "largest state" to me means land size unless you specify otherwise.</font>

It certainly has the most congressional and electoral clout. Largest is appropriate. From the White House perspective, no state is as large. While I mights say "most populous," that is not the only way to discuss it.
