From what I know, 'dog' in Mandarin is gou (pronounced 'go' as in 'go home'). A more 'classic' word is chuan ('chu-' as in 'choose' + '-an' as in 'an apple'). Nothing like 'chow' as far as I know -- not even in the dialects.

ummmm many Chinese words can have same pronounciation... from what i can see it means either "whip you" or "worry you"
Two words "Chow" and "nye" the latter means "you" the 1st is common and cane mean many things... |
Technically the Dog's name means "This Dog's Gonna Beat you" in letteral terms it could mean CANE YOU but i think it would probably mean that in a competative since, in a way, callin it the best darn Chow in the world ^_^;

Would it help If i said that it is pronounced Chow-nee?
