Feyenoord triumph in freaky final
Source: Eurosport Another stunning display from Pierre van Hooijdonk (double: 33', 40' ) helped Feyenoord to their first European trophy since 1974. Dortmund battled back in the second half through Amoroso (47' ) and Koller (58' ), but Tomasson's farewell strike (50' ) ensured Feyenoord the second biggest prize in Europe. Jon Dahl Tomasson could not have imagined a more appropriate good-bye gift before moving on to AC Milan this summer. But the real detonator of what will go down as one of the club's greatest victories, was, again, Pierre van Hooijdonk whose final moment of glory with Feyenoord it may have been. A victory from the heart obtained with guts. Van Hooijdonk, who had hit the post from a free kick just minutes before, struck his first goal from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute after Kohler was shown the red card (sad way to end his Dortmund career) for bringing down Jon Dahl Tomasson in the penalty area. That was clearly the turning point of the match. Seven minutes later the forward struck a spectacular free kick from around 30 metres into the left-hand corner to put the devastating Dutch 2-0 ahead at halftime. But Germans never give up, and Dortmund certainly lived up to that rule. Just two minutes into the second half Marcio Amoroso pulled a goal back with a penalty. But Feyenoord's response was instant and devastating. Thanks to yet another defensive blunder from the German central defence, Tomasson broke through the off side trap to fire in a 20-metre shot three minutes later. 3-1 down but Sammer's men were not out yet as they began turning on the pressure. Their towering Czech striker Jan Koller hit a brilliant right-footed shot into the top left-hand corner from outside of the area in the 58th minute. But Feyenoord, lifted throughout by a spectacular crowd at their Kuip, held on. The victory marked the first European triumph for a Dutch club for seven seasons after Ajax Amsterdam won the European Cup in 1995. Dortmund let the double slip, but have already obtained rich rewards domestically. So... Have any of you seen the match? What do you think?
