If you are where I think you are, then there is a Beholder across the way with a number of his little sub-beholders(Gauths) right? After you give the answers and can cross the bridge, yeah.
There is a shield, I could be wrong but I think it is for sale either in the copper coronet or adventurers mart(Waukeens Promenade), not sure, but it provides protection against Beholder rays. Go back and get it. Also, since most of what Beholders hit you with is psychic attack, chaotic commands, bless, etc., will at least help. The main thing is you have to be strong enough, I got killed by them early on, and gave up. Then my whole party leveled up some more and I came back and buried them. But for now you can try the shield and some good defensive spells. Hope that helps... -D [ 04-30-2002, 06:21 PM: Message edited by: Darkness555 ] |
Yeah, it is the shield of Balduran, for sale in the Adventurer's Mart I believe. But you need the bonus merchants installed. Baldurdash has it I believe. Check it out and good luck.

spoiler
one method I use is before I cross the brige is to cast rasie the dead and send some skelies in front of me first |
Perfect idea since Skels have no mind and can't be affected by mind altering magic. I usually always have a Skel Warrior accompanying my Necromancer at all times.

In my current game, I found a neat way to do this one: Go early! This was the second quest I did after gathering my party, I don't think anyone had even leveled up yet, and there was only one gauth on the other side of the bridge. He hurt us, but we took him down without losing anyone.

Summon some creatures, haste your fighters, attack the gauths and have your mage/s cast every damn damagin spell on that little ass. He'll go down.

my brother went invisable, walked across, then summoned everything and that little woodlands nympf to do his fighting

What I hate is that when you attack the Gauths, there's usually a pack of Shadow Fiends or whatever, that hear the ruckus and charge into the fray, as if you needed more guys to fight. Annoying....
I usually form up well away from the bridge, with a Tank in front of my line of archers (even though the Gauths can see--and shoot--your weaker guys even when they're the full screen away, I still do this. I don't know why). Then I have a Thief lay a few traps along the path the Gauths would have to take to come at me, and then I cast something like Fireball or Cloudkill in their general area. Run back to the main party, keep those ranged weapons ready. Ignore the Shadow Fiends unless they go for a Mage, concentrate fire on the Gauths. As has been mentioned, summons and buffing spells are a big help. And hey! I didn't even use the shield of cheese! |
Sorry... if you're really having trouble then you can always (if you can do 6th lvl spells with Jaheira) cast summon fire elemental. They rock against beholders of any sort, cos beholders bite summoned creatures instead of using their eye-powers, BUT the thing is you need magic weapons to hit the fire elementals and Beholders dun have magic teeth hahahaha bye bye gauths... Works a treat wherever you get trashed by beholders and not quite as cheesy as the shield of Balduran yeah?
