When I played BG1 I enjoyed the side quests and completed about 90% of them. I heard that there were a whole lot more side quests in BG2. Is this true and if so does anybody roughly know how many there are? Can one be too distracted by these quests? I even have heard that you can get quests as you are on quests! So, how does one keep track without losing one's direction??? In your opinion are there any indespensible? Thanks for your advice ahead of time.

i have a hard time sayin no to quests, and will prob do most of them. i have no idea how many there are, and yes, you can get confused with the quest. but you can read all your unfinished quest in your diary.

Oh yeah, there are alot of side-quests in BG2. And it's impossible to give a rough number on how many, but if you take with every little quest that comes in the diary, I think you can count on around maybe 8-9-10 in every single of the seven chapters. Maybe more too. ;)
So you will not suffer of boriness if playing BG2!! :D :D

Well, there's the stuff that's never mentioned.

Like the Guarded Compound, and the Twisted Rune Quest. There's also that demon knight one in the Under Dark.

You get confused sometimes, but do not worry. The Journal has been upgraded quite a bit from BG1, separating Side-quests, done quests and the Main Plot in three different sections.

Thanks to everyone who answered. It gives me a better feel for the game. I am so glad to hear that the game divides the journal into quests, completed quests, and the main plot. I know I must have failed to complete at least quests in BG1 because there was so much to do and the journaling aspect of the game wasn't the greatest. By the way, Jerr Conner, what did you mean when you said "Well, then there's stuff that's never mentioned" and you list the Guarded Compound, the Twisted Rune Quest, and the Demon Knight one in the Under Dark?

what he ment when talking about "twisted rune, etc." was that there are some unfinished quests in the game, i.e. quests which didn't make it into the final version of SoA but still left some hints, enemies or equipment related to them. Rhey are not counted as quests in the journal and do not get you XP points except for the vanquished enemies. there are some ixes on the net which will restore these sidequests.
