What does glede mean? It isn't in any of the dictionaries I have. I found the word when I was reading LOTR- The Fellowship of the Ring. It's around page 330..This is what I read..

It was hot when I first took it, hot as a glede..

Any ideas ? My quess is that it is a really old word not used anymore..or most probably a miss print.

A glede is an archaic word for a hot coal. You are right - it isn't used anymore. It was used during Chaucer's time.
